Mount Olympus In A Camper Van

Mount Olympus

The highest mountain in Greece. Homer said that no wind ever shakes the untroubled peace of Mount Olympus; no rain ever falls there or snow; but the cloudless firmament stretches around it on all sides and the white glory of sunshine is diffused upon its walls.

Decision No 1

Last year I went with my family to Bulgaria in a Camper Van.  We left from Bangor in N Ireland and then took the ferry from Dun Laoghaire near Dublin to Calais.  My three grandsons love travelling by ferry and it was sunshine all the way.

We took a route which included France Germany, Austria, Hungary and Romania.  I have been to Bulgaria  and  Greece from N Ireland about six times  It takes three or four days but it’s such a great trip that we don’t mind that.  We stayed near Sunny Beach for a couple of months.  The breath-taking!  The Black Sea Coast is awesome.  The silver sands, the crystal blue water, the healthy lifestyle draws us back time and time again..

Decision No 2

This trip was a little bit different.  We decided to go to visit Greece.  It was a longer journey but we love Greece and all things Greek and we were also looking forward to once again feasting our eyes on that amazing country.  The Greek tavernas, the hospitality of the Greek people, the amazing architecture and the sense of history and mythology.  It is one of the places everyone should visit before they leave this earth.

Isn’t it incredible what a simple decision can do?  This particular one led us to the top of Mount Olympus in a camper van.  We had no idea that’s where we were heading – that may sound crazy but we are a family who follow their dreams.

We went over the Rhodopi mountains in Bulgaria and continued on until we arrived at Mount Olympus.  It was a wondrous sight .  The tracks at the edge of the mountains were precarious and it was clear that some vehicles had plunged down the mountains and  into oblivion.

At times I must admit that I was terrified but there was no going back.  The beauty of the mountains and the wild horses were unforgettable.  Thank goodness we made that decision.

The expression “In The Lap of The Gods” has a new meaning for me now.  I was there in the lap of the Gods.  The Greek Gods who live at the top of Mount Olympus.
