Have you discovered how to overcome obstacles in your life? Ever hit a brick wall? This can happen in an instant and it can have some unexpected effects. I really did literally hit a brick wall. It was a neat recently built wall but when I crashed into it, it crumbled to the ground in an instant.
Unfortunately my car was a write off and so was the other car that was involved in the accident. For a few moments, I really thought I was dying because I took the full impact. Fortunately no-one else was hurt.
I loved that car, it was a brand new Skoda Octavia when I bought it and I had it for eight years. In all that time it did not have one single problem until it was spun into that wall by the impact with the other car.
I stumbled out of the car bruised and battered. At first I was afraid that I had internal bleeding and might not make it . Princess Diana flashed into my mind. . I was taken to the local hospital in an ambulance as was the other driver. I was x-rayed and although I was very badly bruised and it was very painful no bones were broken.
My son and my three adorable grandchildren arrived at the casualty and I was so glad to see them. I realised what a very lucky person I am. To survive the crash and to have such a loving family is more than anyone could wish for. There can be a silver lining when you meet life’s obstacles -it can highlight what is really important to you. It certainly did for me. It makes you re-assess your priorities.

Overcoming obstacles seems to come easily to some people. Would you agree with that statement, while secretly thinking “Why can’t it come easily to me?” Thoughts like that are never going to help you overcome your obstacles but changing your approach to them will. We are all guilty of thinking from time to time “Why is this happening to me” “What did I do to deserve this”. The truth is that many of the obstacles in our lives have been created by our own actions.
That may be a bitter pill to swallow but taking responsibility for our actions is probably the first step to coping with and overcoming obstacles in our business and our personal lives. There are of course some that we did not create but have to find the way to overcome them anyway.
When I was 13 years old I found out that I was adopted. It was the day that changed my life forever. It was as if my whole world had caved in and I realized that my life had been a lie up to that point. These were the thoughts that I could not share with anyone especially my adoptive parents for obvious reasons. So I kept them to myself and brought them out mostly at night when everyone else in the house was fast asleep. However devastating this news was to me, even in my state of shock, I realized that I had inherited an enormous obstacle and only I could overcome it.
That day I made a decision, a committment to myself, that someday I would find my mother. They told me she had died 3 days after my birth but somehow those words did not ring true and I chose not to believe them. I had some things that most 13 year olds didn’t have – a clear goal – a vision and an indestructable belief that I would overcome every obstacle that society would present me with, to find my true identity and the circumstances of my birth. Above all I would find my own dear mother.
It took me over forty years to find her. I hit many brick walls along the way, secret records, people unwilling to reveal the true facts about my adoption even to the point of hiding my place of birth. Obstacles are there to be overcome and that is why I finally found her 3 days before her hundredth birthday. She made it clear that she did not want to know me or meet me. In fact she basically told me not to bother her again and although I was deeply disappointed at the time, I knew that I had not come so far to let this final obstacle wreck my dream.
So what do you do when you are shunned by your own mother, rejected for the second time?
Well, it was just as devastating and traumatic as that day when I found out I was adopted. The same sleepless nights licking my wounds until one day I decided enough was enough and I picked up the phone and rang my mother. It takes courage sometimes to overcome your obstacles but the rewards can be mind-boggling when you do.
She asked me who I was and I told her in no uncertain terms - "I am your daughter"
To my utter joy and amazement she said "Would you like to come and visit me?
The rest is history and even more amazing than the first part of the story. If you would like to read more I'm afraid you will have to buy the book lol.
